The Evolution of PlayStation






Play Station was the creation of Japanese man, Ken Kutaragi. The console's origins date back to 1988 when Sony entered an agreement with Nintendo to develop a CD-ROM attachment (Super Disc). In 1991, Sony introduced a gaming system, called PlayStation, as a modified version of the Super Disc, as it which was never released.  


The original PlayStation

The first PlayStation console was released in Japan, on the 3rd of December 1994. The console was released North America and Europe 11 months laters (1995).                   The original PlayStation's CD-ROMs held much more memory that other memory devices allowing Sony to develop full motion video; 3D rendered game. The low cost of manufacturing compared to other consoles allowed for PlayStation to be manufactured rapidly and in mass quantities.  This was useful as once PlayStation was an instant hit and quickly outshining the Super Nintendo. 


PS one

The PS one was released alongside the PlayStation 2 in July 2000. It was a redesign of the original PlayStation console. It included 2 main changes, a redesign of the console and the home menu's Graphical User Interface. Altogether, 28.15 million PS one units were sold.



PlayStation 2

Released along the PS one in 2000, it was part of the 6th generation of video game consoles. Up to this day, the PlayStation 2 still remains the most successful home console in the world. The PlayStation 2 sold over 155 million units, this was huge for PlayStation as their first console was already a huge success reaching 102.5 million consoles. PlayStation 2 became the fastest game console to ever reach 100 million units to be shipped within 5 years and 9 months from the launch. 


PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 was released on November 2006 in North America, as a seventh generation game console. This console introduced motion-sensing technology, incorporated a Blu-ray Disc player and high-definition resolution. The PS3 has sold over 80 million consoles as at November 2013. In 2009 a "slim" model of the PS3 was release likewise its predecessors and once again in  2012 the "Super Slim" model of the PS3 was released by Sony. 



PlayStation 4

The latest video game console developed by Sony is the PlayStation 4, released in 2013. It was first released on November 15th in North America, followed by Japan in February 22nd, changing up PS' patterned style of releasing the console first to its Japanese audience. This new device used new technology to allows users to utilise smartphones and tablets as second screens to enhance gameplay. The PS4 once again release the slim model last year in September alongside the Pro model (PS4 Pro). The PlayStation 4 currently retails for $399USD.



                      
Sony has confirmed a PlayStation 5, however there is no release date yet.
