Wii
The Wii was released by Nintendo on 19 November 2006, succeeded by the GameCube. It competed with the Xbox 360 (Microsoft) and PlayStation 3 (Sony). The Wii Remote controller was introduced, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detected movement in three dimensions.
Wii Family Edition
Nintendo released a reconfigured model, the 'Wii Family Edition', in October 2011. It is identical to the original model, but designed to stand horizontally and lacked the Nintendo GameCube compatibility. It was announced on 17 August 2011 and released in Europe and North America.
Wii mini
The Wii mini, was Nintendo's first major console redesign since the compact SNES, which succeeded the standard Wii model. It's a smaller, redesigned Wii with a top-loading disc drive. It could only operate Wii optical discs, as it omitted the GameCube compatibility and all networking capabilities. This model was released in Canada, Europe and USA and not in Japan, Australia or New Zealand.
Wii U
Wii's successor, the 'Wii U' was released on 18 November 2012. It is the first Nintendo console to support HD graphics. The system's primary controller is the Wii U GamePad. The tablet-like controller featured an embedded touchscreen and directional buttons, analog sticks and action buttons. The screen can be used either as an addition to the main display (such as to supplement action on the TV screen to create asymmetrical gameplay) or in supported games, to play the game directly on the GamePad, without the need of the TV. The production of Wii U officially ended in January 2017.
