Multiplayer Game - Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Review
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Nintendo Switch
Mario Kart has been around for years with the original coming out in 1992 on the SNES, since then there have been numerous remakes and upgrades to the game with a total of 13 releases of the Mario Kart franchise but only 8 of them being released on home consoles and the rest on portable or arcade devices.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a great game to play in single player mode but when you have a few friends of family over the game becomes so much more with the added excitement and atmosphere it creates with everyone battling it out against each other.
Mario Kart 8 was first released for the Wii U console in 2014 but with the release of the new Nintendo Switch console Nintendo seen the opportunity to re-release the game and add some new features. With the Deluxe version, we see new characters added with the likes of;
- Gold Mario
- Bowser JR.
- Dry Bones
- King Boo
- Inkling Girl (From the splatoon games)
- Inkling Boy (From the splatoon games)
with these characters added to what was already on the Mario Kart 8 game bringing the total of characters to choose from to 42. Nintendo's hugely successful Splatoon's characters have also been added to the Deluxe version.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gives players the ability to steal items from other players as well as being able to hold 2 items at once instead of only the one, the thing is can you hold onto it before someone else steals it from you. The power slides abilities have also been advanced giving players that extra boost needed for taking on sharp corners and curves.
Another added feature to the game is the 200cc game mode, all previous Mario Kart games have come with the ability to change the difficulty over three different settings from 50cc, 100cc to 150cc but with the Deluxe version, a new difficulty mode has been added with it being 200cc. From just playing with friends and in the online mode I can say that the 200cc level is extremely hard especially in the online world and I'll definitely be needing more practice before heading back to the 200cc online mode.
New vehicles have also been added to the Deluxe version with 2 of them being based on the Splatoon franchise and Koopa Clown which appeared in Mario Kart 7. Different characters also get to choose from different parts for their cars but are limited to what they can choose depending on the character that you are using at the time.
The Deluxe's battle mode has also been updated taking it back to the traditional arena-based battle setting and with each player starting with 5 balloons instead of 3. The greatest feature I found when playing the game was when you are hit and lose a balloon it tells you who hit you so if it was anyone your playing with you can plan your revenge attack. There are 5 different battle modes to keep everyone entertained for hours on end, as well as 5 new battle courses and 3 retro courses that bring back memories of playing the original Mario Kart.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a great game for players of all ages, I highly recommend this game to anyone who has loved playing any of the Mario franchise games or who just enjoys having a laugh with family and friends. Deluxe hooks players fast and keeps you engaged the entire game without realising how long you have actually been playing for. I would give it a 9/10
